cellular
• more CD25+CD44- double negative cells are in G1 and fewer are in S indicating cell cycle arrest
• no typical telophase cells can be found among the Birc5 deficient cells
• 37% CD25+CD44-- and 32% of CD25-CD44- double negative cells are apoptotic compared to only 5-7% of cells in littermate controls

hematopoietic system
• 37% CD25+CD44-- and 32% of CD25-CD44- double negative cells are apoptotic compared to only 5-7% of cells in littermate controls
• the thymus lacks the normal cortex-medulla compartmentalization
• the thymus is much smaller
• shorter and thicker spindles are seen in mutant CD25+CD44-- and CD25-CD44- double negative cells
• the vast majority of the cells in the thymus appear to be immature thymocytes
• the average number of thymocytes is about 2% that seen in littermate controls
• the overall number of DN cells is decreased however these now make up about 95% of the total thymocytes
• CD25+CD44- DN cells make up about 80% of the total DN cells compared to less than 50% in littermate controls
• CD25-CD44- DN cells are reduced to about 4% of the total DN cells compared to less than about 30% in littermate controls

endocrine/exocrine glands
• the thymus lacks the normal cortex-medulla compartmentalization
• the thymus is much smaller
• the average number of thymocytes is about 2% that seen in littermate controls
