• mice are alive at birth but die rapidly afterwards due to respiratory failure

• decrease in PECAM staining surrounding dilated peripheral lung tubules indicates deficits in vasculogenesis
• failure of peripheral mesenchymal differentiation as indicated by extensive staining for alphaSMA surrounding the dilated peripheral tubules
• while lobulation and early branching morphogenesis were intact, later stages of development are affected, with arrest of late branching morphogenesis
• formation and differentiation of peripheral bronchioles and acini are lacking
• reduction in numbers of terminal alveolar saccules
• formation and differentiation of peripheral bronchioles and acini are lacking
• squamous cell differentiation is lacking in the lung periphery, suggesting arrested terminal differentiation of type II cells
• mutants exhibit abnormally dilated peripheral lung tubules indicating defects in the formation of the lung parenchyma
