reproductive system
• on an inbred (129/SvEv) genetic background, female homozygotes fail to produce any offspring over a 6-month period in contrast to inbred heterozygotes which yield 32 litters (0.76 0.1 litters/month) with an average litter size of 5.69 0.33
• Background Sensitivity: female homozygotes are severely subfertile on a mixed (129/SvEv x C57BL/6J) genetic background, and completely infertile on an inbred (129/SvEv) genetic background

immune system
• mice show increased susceptibility to infection with the coronavirus murine hepatitis virus strain 1 (MHV-1) , showing more severe lung injury in the lungs in the earlier stages of infection but not in later stages
• MHV-1 infected mice show increased early inflammatory cell infiltration, with higher neutrophil and macrophage recruitment in the lungs at 1-2 days post infection compared to controls
• treatment of MHV-1-infected mice with recombinant PTX3 attenuates virus-induced lung injury and blocks neutrophil infiltration in the lungs but promotes pulmonary infiltration of macrophages

reproductive system
• ovaries isolated from female homozygotes at 8 hrs post-hCG are enriched in preovulatory follicles; however, in several preovulatory follicles, the oocyte is not surrounded by cumulus cells or the expanded cumulus mass appears to be randomly scattered in the antrum surrounding the oocyte
• after hormonal (hCG) stimulation, wild-type oocytes are embedded in a three-dimensional extracellular matrix, whereas mutant oocytes are denuded of cumulus granulosa cells that readily detach from the cumulus oophorus
• at 19 to 20 hrs after hCG stimulation, fewer oocytes are released into the oviducts of homozygous mutant females (9.9 0.5) relative to heterozygous (31.2 0.6) or wild-type females (22.2 0.9)
• Background Sensitivity: on a mixed genetic background, female homozygotes bred to wild-type males over a 6-month period exhibit significantly reduced fertility, whereas on a 129/SvEv inbred genetic background, female homozygotes fail to produce live offspring
• female homozygotes produce fewer pups born per litter and nearly half the number of litters per month relative to heterozygous females (2.24 0.16 vs 8.16 0.11 pups/litter and 0.59 0.07 vs 1.02 0.03 litter/month, respectively)
• only 1.3% of oocytes isolated from superovulated female homozygotes are able to reach the two-cell stage relative to 55% of oocytes from wild-type females

endocrine/exocrine glands
• ovaries isolated from female homozygotes at 8 hrs post-hCG are enriched in preovulatory follicles; however, in several preovulatory follicles, the oocyte is not surrounded by cumulus cells or the expanded cumulus mass appears to be randomly scattered in the antrum surrounding the oocyte
• after hormonal (hCG) stimulation, wild-type oocytes are embedded in a three-dimensional extracellular matrix, whereas mutant oocytes are denuded of cumulus granulosa cells that readily detach from the cumulus oophorus
