• at P7, mutant lenses are proportionately smaller but show normal cellular histology
• by P14, the mutant lens mass is reduced by 34% relative to the wild-type
• however, no significant differences in lens mass are noted at P0, and eye and lens mass ratios remain constant after P14
• in addition, adult mutant lenses lack cataracts, indicating normal attainment and maintenance of lens transparency
• in mutant mice, the postnatal ocular growth rate lags behind that of wild-type littermates
• in mutant mice, the postnatal lens growth rate lags behind that of wild-type littermates
• however, mutant lenses synthesize markers of lens differentiation at appropriate levels and exhibit normal crystallin solubility
• at P7, mutant eyes are proportionately smaller but show normal anatomy
• by P14, the mutant eye mass is reduced by 25% relative to the wild-type
• however, no significant differences in eye mass are noted at P0, and eye and lens mass ratios remain constant after P14

• the enlarged extracellular spaces and disrupted fiber-to-fiber contacts in the fiber cells of the lens core of crystallin gamma b mutants is rescued in these double homozygotes
• while the alpha 3 connexin knockin rescues the dense nuclear cataract otherwise caused by the crystallin gamma b mutation, a very mild cortical opacity with a ring-like defect is still found in these double homozygotes and the lenses have much lower light scattering at 21 days of age compared with un-rescued crystallin gamma b mutants, but is still 6% higher than wild-type controls
