immune system
• modest increase in the number of splenic mononuclear cells in mice at 8-19 weeks of age compared to controls
• modest enlargement at 20 weeks of age
• extensive hyperplasia of the white pulp zone
• increase in the percentage and absolute number of B cells in the spleen
• however, the absolute number of splenic T cells is similar to controls
• expanded white pulp area, primarily containing B cells
• however, the mantle zone is normal, no red pulp invasion is seen, and the geographic distribution of B and T cells within the white pulp is similar to wild-type mice
• prolonged survival of a subset (about 10% of the total number of cells) of B cells compared to control cells when cultured in DMEM supplemented with only 5% fetal calf serum
• this prolonged survival results in about a 500-fold survival advantage after 14 days in culture
• in the para-aortic lymph node the medullary cords and interfollicular area are abnormal with expansion by infiltrates of mixed small and large cleaved follicular center cells, immunoblasts, and plasma cells
• 2- to 3-fold enlargement of the mesenteric and para-aortic lymph nodes in mice over 15 weeks of age
• however, no enlargement of other regional or peripheral lymph nodes is seen in mice up to 25 weeks of age
