• swollen and/or red hindfoot toes at about 7 weeks of age

• Background Sensitivity: mice on a mixed background that includes C3HeB/FeJ and either BALB/c, C57BL/6J, or CAST/EiJ do not show any paw swelling
• swollen and/or red hindfoot pads at about 7 weeks of age; however forepaws are rarely affected
• maintenance of mice in either conventional or specific pathogen free conditions does not affect the phenotype
• penetrance of this phenotype is incomplete but increases with age alomg with severity each reaching maximal levels around 13 weeks of age

• mild inflammation of the bone marrow and mice become arthritic by 13 weeks of age; however, no inflammation is detected in the articular joints, synovium, or periosteum
