mortality/aging
behavior/neurological
• increased activity in open field
• reduced anxiety in open field emergence, elevated plus maze, and novel-object tests
reproductive system
• homozygous matings resulted in fewer successful pregnanacies than littermate controls
• Background Sensitivity: female fertility is more severely reduced on a mixed 129P2/OlaHsd x C57BL/6 genetic background (only 33% vs 85% in wild-type females) than on an outbred genetic background following 4-6 backcrosses onto the ICR strain (50% vs 87% in wild-type females)

vision/eye
• 40% of males over 30 weeks of age exhibit corneas with hypertrophy of the surface and keratinization
• less than 20% of females younger than 10 weeks of age exhibit corneal keratinization and more than 90% of females over 30 weeks of age show keratinization
• however, the infraorbital lacrimal gland, conjunctiva and corneal neural network are normal
• corneal epithelial cells are hypertrophied
• cloudiness of the cornea and the ocular surface appears white and sandy
• tear secretion levels and tear volume of males and females are reduced
• mice treated with eye drops containing a peptide of ADYCAP1 P(ACAP38) show increased tear secretion and repeated treatments prevents further corneal keratinization

behavior/neurological
• following 4-6 backcrosses onto the ICR strain, female homozygotes with a reduced litter size spend significantly less time crouching over their pups than wild-type females
• however, other maternal behaviors, such as nesting, sniffing, and pup retrieval, are normal
• Background Sensitivity: crouching time is significantly reduced on an ICR-enriched genetic background but remains relatively unaffected on a mixed 129P2/OlaHsd x C57BL/6 genetic background where litter size is normal
• following 4-6 backcrosses onto the ICR strain, female homozygotes display a reduced mating frequency relative to wild-type controls (58% vs 93%, respectively), as indicated by the presence of a vaginal plug
• after mating with vasectomized males, 3 of 9 female homozygotes showed an abnormal pseudopregnancy response, whereas another three did not mate, with a single exception, and the remaining three showed normal responses; in contrast, all wild-type control females mated with an interval of 11-12 days
• however, no obvious defects are observed in the length of estrous cycles
reproductive system
• Background Sensitivity: following 4-6 backcrosses onto ICR, the % of female homozygotes that deliver pups is increased to 50% relative to only 33% of female homozygotes on a mixed 129P2/OlaHsd x C57BL/6 genetic background
• Background Sensitivity: the average litter size is not significantly different between homozygous mutant females and wild-type control females on a mixed 129P2/OlaHsd x C57BL/6 genetic background (9.00 0.69 vs 8.55 0.84 pups/litter, respectively) but is significantly reduced on an ICR-enriched genetic background (11.50 0.34 vs 13.54 0.54 pups/litter, respectively)
• following 4-6 backcrosses onto the ICR strain, female homozygotes produce a significantly reduced litter size relative to wild-type female controls
