N normal phenotype
digestive/alimentary system
• parts of the crypts in mutants are enlarged 2-fold over wild-type
• Paneth cells are not restricted to the crypt bottom as they are in wild-type but are widely distributed, often found in the middle of the crypts

endocrine/exocrine glands

growth/size/body
• homozygotes show growth retardation up to 4 months of age, although birth weights are similar to wild-type

digestive/alimentary system
• gastric glands are expanded and display disordered branching patterns
• pyloric gland cells of mutants have reduced levels of pepsinogen
• chief cell differentiation is almost completely suppressed in mutant stomachs
• some parietal cells in mutants lacked developed rough endoplasmic reticulum
• when parietal cells from mutants are treated with histamine, little change is seen; when wild-type cells are treated, intracellular canaliculi are enlarged and connected to the luminal surface with wide openings
• gastric mucosa in adult homozygotes is 2- to 3-fold thicker than in wild-type; most cells in the upper half of the fundic mucosa demonstrate foveolar hyperplasias in the stomach
• gastric acid secretion in mutant stomachs is almost completely suppressed
