• apoptosis levels are increased in the retinas at 3 months and further increased at 14 months
• density of rod bipolar cells is decreased at 3 months and declines further at 14 months of age
• density of horizontal cells is decreased
• the inner nuclear layer is thinner at 3 and 14 months of age
• outer nuclear layer thinning is seen at older ages
• the outer nuclear layer is disorganized at 3 months of age
• mice show progressive retinal cell loss
• by 14 weeks of age, but not at 6 weeks, ERG a-waves are reduced and the reduction progresses with increasing age
• after an 8-hour light exposure, mice show a greater loss of retinal function than wild-type mice, showing decreased a-wave amplitude

• homozygotes are obtained at the expected Mendelian ratios, are fertile and display no gross developmental or morphological defects when raised under SPF conditions

respiratory system
• in an ovalbumin-induced model of allergic asthma, unrestrained conscious homozygotes fail to exhibit increased airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR) in response to inhaled methacholine
• similar results are obtained using the same protocol with anesthetized, mechanically ventilated homozygotes and measuring AHR in response to intravenous methacholine
• at 6 or 24 hrs after last allergen challenge, homozygotes show no significant differences in eosinophil numbers (in either BAL or lung tissue), IgE levels or BAL fluid levels of interleukin IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 relative to wild-type mice
