Mouse lines carrying:
Hoxc4tm1Hsu mutation (0 available); any Hoxc4 mutation (8 available)
phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
skeleton
N
• cervical vertebrae anterior to C7 are not transformed
• in some mice with 8 pairs of vertebrosternal ribs, an additional sternebra is seen where the eighth pair attach
• 8 instead of 7 pairs of ribs may be attached to sternum bilaterally
• in over half of mutants, xiphoid process is observed to have an aperture or fissure
• most newborns exhibit formation of rib heads on cervical vertebra C7 compared to no wild-type animals; ossified processes extending toward the midline are seen on the ventral side of C7
• in contrast to wild-type mice which do not form ribs on C7, a small number of mutants show rib formation or extensive rib formation on C7
• extra vertebrosternal ribs are seen in some mice
• in around half of mutants, spinous process on thoracic vertebra 3 (T3) is the most prominent instead of T2 as in wild-type

nervous system
N
• cranial and facial nerves appear normal in embryos at E10.5 and 14.5

behavior/neurological
N
• normal patterns of behavior are observed in postnatal animals
