This allele, present in the DBA/2J strain, determines low preference for saccharin (0.1% solution) over water (J:5474). Strains 129/SvEv, BALB/c, and C3H/HeJ also carry the allele. The allele is selectively expressed in taste receptor cells. The mechanism of preference is predicted to be related to the incentive value of the taste of saccharin rather than to the threshold for detection (J:5474).
Preference for other sweeteners (acesulfame, dulcin, and sucrose) across a panel of 26 inbred strains showed a high correlation with saccharin preference, suggesting the existence of a single receptor for sweetness (J:9874). |
