Reduced ear pinna size was found in descendants of males treated with triethylenemelamine and X-irradiation. Ear size in heterozygotes is variable, and may be bilaterally asymetrical. Ear shape is often irregular.
There is a shortage of Sme/+ heterozygotes at weaning, but not at birth, due to postnatal mortality. Homozygous mutant mice show no or very small ear pinnae. They appear to die perinatally with cleft palates and other abnormalities (J:14271).
