| Notes |
xn - DDT-induced
Affected homozygotes appear to be fully viable until birth but die within a few hours postnatally. Penetrance is incomplete and dependent on the genetic background, varying from 33% to 84% and being twice as high in females as in males. In the most severely affected mice there is extensive failure of the cephalic portion of the neural tube to close at 10 days of gestation, the bony vault of the cranium fails to develop, and the tissues of the brain are exposed. The failure to close can be mild or severe and can extend from the thalamus to the medulla. Unaffected xn/xn mice probably survive and reproduce, but they have not been examined to discover whether they have minor defects not detectable externally. |
