Len2 encodes a 23kDa major lens protein similar to beta-crystallin, synthesized from embryonic day 14 to postnatal day 14. Variation is seen by isolelectric focusing: the a allele in O20/A, M.m. molossinus and in wild mice from California and Peru; the ballele in all other strains tested.
