Exz1 and Exz2 control adrenal X-zone development and involution. BALB/cBy females, carrying the dominant allele, undergo fatty degeneration of the X-zone by 60 days old. Degeneration without lipid accumulation occurs at a later age in C57BL/6By females with the recessive alleles.
