X-Gal (blue-green) staining of embryos at E11.5, 12.5, and 13.5 dpc. Enlarged panels below the whole mount views of the 13.5 dpc embryos show detail of the lateral mesodermal plate and anterior limb-bud. The images are of embryos homozygous for the beta-Gal insertion allele, which lack a functional gene. The pattern staining in these embryos was indistinguishable from that of heterozygous mice but was somewhat stronger consistent with a gene dosage effect.
