Caption Wild-type (HSL+/+, a) and Lipetm1Gam/Lipetm1Gam (HSL-/-, b) mice at 6, 8 (c,d) and 12 weeks. Tubules at stage VII of the cycle from mutant mice at 6 weeks of age (b) reveal a reduction in the frequency of elongating step 16 spermatids (arrowheads), as well as multinucleation (curved arrows) and disoriented heads (arrow, inset), unlike that seen in wild-type mice (a). At 8 weeks, a stage I tubule from mutant mice (c) shows a reduction in frequency of of step 13 elongating spermatids (arrowheads) with some being disoriented (circle) and revealing abnormal shapes (arrows). Multinucleation of elongating spermatids is also seen (curved arrow). At stage VII (d) some step 16 spermatid heads are disoriented and appear embedded together in a single spherical cytoplasm that is highly vacuolated (curved arrows), moderately stained and situated close to the lumen. At 12 weeks (e,f) step 16 spermatids at stage VII were virtually absent. The few remaining spermatids are multinucleated and disoriented (curved arrows, e and f). Large cavities (stars) are alos seen within the seminiferous epithelium (e,f). There is also evidence of multinucleation of occasional round spermatids (open arrow), and some round spermatids (small arrows, f) appear to be released into the lumen (Lu). Original magnification (a-f), 448x; (b, inset), 1,120x.
