Ventricular and atrial septal defects. A: Transverse sections through the thorax of Hey2^tm1Gess/Hey2^tm1Gess (-/-) and Hey2⁺/Hey2^tm1Gess (+/-) embryos at stages E12.5, E13.5, E14.5 and E16.5. While all homozygous hearts exhibit a ventricular septal defect (VSD, arrowhead), only E12.5 heterozygotes presented with a VSD that is physiological at this stage. B: An isolated VSD at stage E16.5 in a CD1 background homozygous mutant mouse similar to VSDs seen in C57BL/6 mice. C: Transverse heart sections of a homozygous mutant mouse 5 days after birth showing a VSD combined with a persistent foramen ovale (arrow, right).
