Phenotype Image Detail
Image
Caption Toluidine blue-stained sections of the saccule of 5-6 week old wild-type (+/+, A) and Atp2b2tm1Ges/Atp2b2tm1Ges (-/-, B) mice. The macula (M), a neuroepithelial plaque containing the sensory hair cells and lying immediately beneath the gelatinous otolithic membrane (OM), appears histologically similar in mice of both genotypes. Innervation (open arrowheads) of the macula is also histologically similar in both genotypes. Otoconia (arrow), the calcium carbonate crystals embedded in the otolithic membrane, are absent in mutant mice. Scale bar, 50 um.
