| Definition | A characteristic of the coat color of wild-type mice and other mammals in which an individual hair has black pigment (eumelanin) at the tip and the base, and a band of yellow pigment (phaeomelanin) in the middle. This coloration has the effect of softening the visual outline of a mammal in the wild, making it harder to see than an animal of solid color.
