Inbred Strains of Rats: WDF

WDF

Inbr. N11F11 (1986).

Colour: Albino.

Genet. c.

Origin: Ikeda et al (1981) by backcrossing the fatty gene (fa) to F8 and later generations of outbred Wistar Kyoto rats being inbred by brother x sister mating. The aim was to develop a model of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Characteristics

The animals exhibit hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, peripheral and hepatic insulin resistance linked to abnormalities in enzyme levels and activities, diet and sex-dependent diabetes and possible diabetes-linked peripheral neuropathy (Kava et al 1990).
