• at P30, the average density and density recovery profiles of retinal horizontal cells is normal, indicating that horizontal cell mosaics are preserved
• in vivo electroretinographs showed that dark-adapted a- and b-wave amplitudes (reflecting rod and rod bipolar cell responses, respectively) as well as light-adapted b-wave amplitudes (reflecting cone bipolar cell responses to bright stimuli) are normal
• ganglion cell spike trains elicited by dim and bright light stimuli (i.e., the retinal output) are also normal
• after intravitreal injections of AAV-Grm6-tdTomato, rod bipolar cell dendrites are significantly smaller than in wild-type controls, indicating that changes in horizontal cell axons are matched by changes in synaptic partner dendrites to stabilize retinal function
• however, the density of their connections with rods is normal and rod bipolar cell axon size is unaffected
• when horizontal cells are sparsely labeled by AAV-CAG-YFP, horizontal cell axons are significantly smaller than in wild-type controls
• however, the densities of horizontal cell axon tips and dendrite clusters as well as the density of axon branches are unaffected
