• mice show no skeletal muscle dysfunction in endurance and sprint exercise protocols or in exercise performance under ischemic conditions relative to wild-type controls
• NH3 accumulation in the gastrocnemius is markedly reduced after sprint exercise under ischemic conditions
• IMP is not detectable in the gastrocnemius muscle before or after performing sprint (30 s) and endurance (85 min) exercises, indicating that the degradation pathway of AMP to IMP is blocked
• under acute ischemia conditions, IMP is still not detectable in the gastrocnemius whereas IMP in increased in wild-type controls
• after a short sprint exercise under ischemia conditions, ATP, ADP and AMP levels in the gastrocnemius are higher than those in wild type controls
• adenosine production is significantly increased in the gastrocnemius after sprint exercise under ischemic conditions
