• occasionally, microglial cells in the neocortex and hippocampus are clustered in groups similar to the microglial nodules seen in HIV encephalitis
• mice exhibit increased number of F4/80+ microglial cells that display increased branching and cytoplasmic distension, suggesting microglial activation
• extensive vacuolizations of dendrites
• decrease in synpato-dendritic complexity
• 40% reduction in the number of large (>100 um2) neurons in the neocortex
• loss of large pyramidal neurons
