endocrine/exocrine glands
• the stromal layer is frequently disorganized
• regions of smooth muscle layers associated with the ducts exhibit regions of thickening and thinning
• prostatic ducts are atypical and often so filled with epithelial that they lack an open lumen
• while epithelial cells or prostatic ducts are tightly associated with the basement membrane, the infoldings are shorter and more numerous
• prostatic ducts have more epithelial cells and are hyperplastic
• hyperplasia throughout the prostate gland with increased enfolding of the basement membrane
• mice develop low-grade prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) with epithelial cells pushing through basement membrane and invading smooth muscle layer after 1 year
