N normal phenotype
endocrine/exocrine glands
• seen at P12 becoming a major component of the dermal layer at P14 - P15
• enlargement is cyclic and linked to the hair cycle

integument
• seen at P12 becoming a major component of the dermal layer at P14 - P15
• enlargement is cyclic and linked to the hair cycle
• cyclic alopecia
• at P11 hair loss begins at the head and progresses towards the tail region eventually resulting in complete loss of all hair including whiskers
• hair regrowth is initiated a few days after hair loss but is followed by hair loss
• synchrony of the cycle of hair loss and regrowth decreases with age but asynchronous cyclic alopecia continues for more than 2 years
• abnormal detachment of the hair shaft is seen in skin sections
• detachment is seen more frequently as hairs progress to the catagen stage
• flattened and smooth rather than scaly as in wild-type controls
• the cuticle of the hair shaft is ill formed and the interlocking structure between the cuticle of the hair shaft and the cuticle of the inner root sheath is largely absent
• detectable by P6 and becomes more prominent by P15 - P16
• hyperplasia is cyclic and linked to the hair cycle
