• increase in the width of the diaphysis is observed at 9 months of age
• long bones of ovariectomized mutants show a greater decrease in bone density, yield energy, failure load and stiffness than wild-type bones, indicating bone fragility similar to osteoporosis after ovariectomy
• increase in osteoclast number and surface
• width of cortical bone is increased at 6 months of age, reaching 150% of the wild-type width by 9 months of age
• mutants contain more cancellous bone than wild-type mice at 6 and 9 months of age
• cancellous and cortical bone formation rates are increased in long bones and vertebrae
• develop bone remodeling abnormalities by 6 months of age
• 6 month old mice show a significant increase in failure load, indicating increased bone strength
