• mice that were previously conditioned to associate a certain cage environment with cocaine do not reinstate their cocaine-seeking behavior when administered the drug after a 16 day extinction phase

nervous system
• basal glutamate-mediated receptor currents are enhanced in these mice
• cocaine-induced synaptic strengthening in the ventral tegmental area does not occur in these mice
• a higher occurrence of spontaneous AMPA excitatory postsynaptic currents occurs in the ventral tegmental area
• NMDA-mediated excitatory postsynaptic currents are completely abolished in the ventral tegmental area of these mice
