immune system
• there is a 15-fold change in the ratio of single positive CD4 versus CD8 thymocyte production
• older mice can develop thymomas consisting of thymocytes with a CD8+CD4lowTCRlow morphology
• thymocyte development is skewed towards development into the CD8 T cell lineage
• mutant bone marrow can support CD8 T cell development when transferred to class I MHC or class II MHC-deficient host mice
• however, mutant bone marrow can not support CD8 T cell development in hosts deficient for both class I and class II MHC
• while decreases in CD4 single positive thymocyte number are inconsistent, kinetic studies demonstrate a 5-fold decrease in CD4 single-positive thymocyte production compared to control
• there is a 10-fold increase in the number and percentage of mature CD8 single-positive thymocytes compared to controls
• production of these single-positive CD8 thymocytes is increased 3-fold

neoplasm
• older mice can develop thymomas consisting of thymocytes with a CD8+CD4lowTCRlow morphology
