• at P30 to P40, one-third of retinas exhibit greater numbers and higher density of retinal ganglion cell axon bundles compared to in Atoh7tm1Gan homozygotes with the majority correctly orientated towards the optic disk
• mice exhibit severe optic nerve hypoplasia
• at 4 to 5 weeks of age, optic nerve diameters are 50% to 60% of wild-type with substantial restoration of optic nerves
