• no abnormalities were found in the pH sensitivity of neurons in the retrotrapezoid nucleus
• serotonergic neurons within the raphe nucleus lack pH dependent-changes in discharge
• wild-type firing rates decrease from 1.2 Hz to 0.5 Hz over a pH range of 6.9 to pH 7.5 while the firing rate of mutant neurons remains constant at about 0.5 Hz over the same pH range
• there are no changes in the averaged I-V relationships obtained during extracellular acidification to alkalization while wild-type neurons rectify weakly and reverse near the expected Ek
