N normal phenotype
homeostasis/metabolism
• 80% reduction in brain 5-HT production

behavior/neurological
• in a test of social interaction in a neutral arena, males exhibit enhanced levels of physical attacks against a non-aggressive male
• immobility times in the tail suspension test are prolonged (J:131619)
• mutants exhibit increased immobility in the tail-suspension test compared to wild-type mice (J:196373)
• fluoxetine treatment decreases immobility in mutants (J:196373)
• however, no differences in gross locomotor activity are seen and fluoxetine treatment significantly decreases forward locomotion in mutants (J:196373)
• in the dark-light emergence test, mutants display longer latencies to cross to the lighted compartment, reduced activity in the lighted compartment, and more transitions between the two compartments compared to controls

nervous system
• mutants exhibit increased intra-network synchrony within medial prefrontal cortex and basal amygdala (increase in amygdala-medial prefrontal cortex delta and beta spectral coherence) and increased internetwork synchrony between the two networks (increase in amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex delta-beta cross-frequency phase coupling)
• fluoxetine treatment decreases amygdala-medial prefrontal cortex delta coherence in mutants but has no effect in wild-type mice, however chronic fluoxetine treatment does not have a significant effect on beta coherence and cross-frequency phase coupling
