immune system
• 30% of thymocytes survive 6 days in culture compared to less than 1% for thymocytes from wild-type mice due to less apoptosis
• similar results are seen for splenic cells
• apoptosis induced by dexamethasone only causes a10-20% reduction in the number of thymocytes compared to 90 to 98% in control mice
• thymocytes are also resistant to apoptosis induced by low-dose radiation
• thymocytes are resistant to apoptosis triggered by CD3 ligation
• ratio of CD4 to CD8 single positive T cells is 1.3 in transgenic mice compared to 3.9 in wild-type mice
• at 12 months of age, there is a 3-4 fold increase in the absolute number of T cells in the spleen
• transgenic mice have 83 x 106 T cells compared to 25 x 106 T cells
• ratio of CD4 to CD8 T cells in the spleen is 1.4 compared to 2.6 in control mice
• CD3high/TCRhigh cells make up 40% of thymocytes compared to 15% in non-transgenic controls
• there is a reciprocal decrease in CD3lo cells in the thymus
• the number of T cells found in the spleen doubles
• the percentage of CD8 single positive T cells found in the thymus is almost double that in wild-type
• the percentage of CD8 T cells in the spleen is also doubled

neoplasm
• 18 of 68 mice develop lymphoma at a mean age of 18 months compared to 1 wild-type mouse out of 56 developing lymphoma in the control group
• 15 of the 18 lymphomas are large cell lymphoma with several showing immunoblastic features
• the remaining 3 are diffuse small lymphocytic lymphoma
• the lymphomas usually present as a rapidly expanding mass in the mesenteric lymph nodes though they can also occur in the mediastinal or cervical nodes
• extranodal involvement in other tissues occurs frequently
• splenomegaly and ascites fluid are sometimes observed
