• ectopic cartilage appears between malleal/incal region and the extended basitrabecular process and/or ala temporalis
• hyoid in some mutants is fused only unilaterally to basisphenoid bone
• bone typically shows extended ossification center and connects to stapes through a transformed lesser horn
• at E10.5, apoptosis extending from proximal to distal mandibular region, but is confined to proximal region in wild-type
• lower jaw is mirror image of upper jaw with arrays of vibrissae at E18.5
• skeletal analysis shows duplication of upper jaw elements in lower jaw region
