mortality/aging
• most of the severely growth retarded animals die within 2 weeks of birth (J:92363)
• 40% to 50% of mice die shortly after birth (J:131874)

renal/urinary system
N
• mice have normal kidney size at birth
• mice exhibit increased apoptosis in the kidney, specifically in the cortical interstitium and microcystic tubules, compared to in wild-type mice
• increased apoptosis in the microcystic renal tubules
• tubules exhibit microcystic changes such as thin epithelial cells and the lumina is widened compared to in wild-type mice

digestive/alimentary system
• ileocecal sphincter at junction between large and small bowel is absent, resulting in continuous transition from lower ileum to colon
• at this transition point, smooth muscle layer is thin and disorganized compared to controls
• there are signs of aberrant cell differentiation in pyloric region of stomach with ectopic islands of alkaline phosphatase-positive cells located in epithelium

growth/size/body
• after first week postnatal, pups show growth retardation with ~1/3 reaching less than 50% of normal bodyweight

muscle
• ileocecal sphincter is absent

cellular
• mice exhibit increased apoptosis in the kidney, specifically in the cortical interstitium and microcystic tubules, compared to in wild-type mice
• increased apoptosis in the microcystic renal tubules
