• after induction of diabetes with streptozotocin (STZ) injection, mice show decreased body weight compared to non-diabetic mutants

• levels of circulating AGE (advanced glycation end products) are higher in diabetic mice than controls, regardless of Ager status
• after induction of diabetes with streptozotocin injection, mice have higher blood glucose levels than untreated controls

cardiovascular system
• angiogenic response in an in vivo assay using implanted matrigel is similar in STZ-treated Ager-null mice and nondiabetic controls, whereas total cell number and smooth muscle cell number are significantly decreased in STZ-treated wild-type compared to untreated mice

cellular
• number of apoptotic cells is decreased in STZ-treated and untreated Ager-null mice compared to STZ-treated wild-type controls
• in STZ-treated mutants, cell proliferation is similar to untreated mutants or wild-type, whereas a significant decrease is observed in STZ-treated wild-type mice
