Abnormal hair follicle morphogenesis in olt/olt mice

reproductive system
N
• female fertility is normal
• germ cell numbers are normal up to stage VII
• significant drop in germ cell numbers after step 13
• no spermatozoa in testis or epididymis
• mature spermatids lack tail structures although manchettes do form
• "homogenization resistant" testicular spermatids are significantly reduced in number
• arrested at stage of elongating spermatids (acrosome phase) (J:18271)
• aborted flagellum formation (J:18271)
(J:30721)
• males are sterile

endocrine/exocrine glands
N
• testicular steroidogenesis is normal

integument
N
• dorsal hair in normal anagen stage at day 15
• normal vibrissae
• due to premature exit of anagen phase
• retarded growth of the ventral coat at 11 days
• conspicuously reduced in the lower ventral and medial femoral regions (J:142517)
• density of hair is slightly reduced dorsally (J:142517)
• sparse fur in adults (J:24774)
• females more affected than males (J:24774)
• bent and coiled hair shafts in inguinal and medial femoral regions at postnatal day 15
• occasional dorsal hairs with bent and coiled hair shafts at postnatal day 15
• incompletely keratinized
• no proliferation in narrow bulbs in the medial femoral region
• some apoptotic cells
• normal numbers at day 15
• become less abundant by 3 months of age
• hair in inguinal and femoral regions is in catagen phase at postnatal day 15
• increased cell layers in regions with more pronounced alopecia

cellular
• no spermatozoa in testis or epididymis
• mature spermatids lack tail structures although manchettes do form
• "homogenization resistant" testicular spermatids are significantly reduced in number
