reproductive system
• 20-30% of mutant oocytes extrude abnormally large polar bodies; half are >30 mm in diameter, while the remaining half undergo mitotic-like cleavage to produce cells of equal size
• in 90% of mutant oocytes, the first polar body persists for more than 11 hrs while in wild-type it degrades by 7 hours
• first polar bodies also elongate and frequently undergo an additional division instead of undergoing rapid degeneration
• the first meiotic division of mutant oocytes frequently resembles mitotic cleavage or produces an abnormally large polar body
• mutant oocytes fail to arrest at metaphase II and instead undergo parthenogenetic activation
• the metaphase spindle does not properly translocate to the cell surface in mutant oocytes
• mutant females exhibit reduced fertility
