• females displayed significant growth retardation postnatally from 8 weeks onward

• almost no acute insulin secretion in response to elevated blood glucose levels and pancreatic islets did not secrete insulin in response to glucose, arginine, or KCl stimulation in vitro
• significantly higher fasting blood glucose levels in females at 4 weeks of age, and both males and females had high blood glucose levels at 8 weeks of age
• significantly lower plasma insulin levels after glucose injection (0.51 ng/ml vs 1.51 ng/ml in wild-type) or arginine administration
• significantly higher blood glucose levels than wild-type in a glucose tolerance test
