vision/eye
• at E15.5 retinal ganglion cell apoptosis is seen and at E17.5 loss of these cells is accelerated and propagated from the central to the peripheral retina
• a loss of 70% of the retinal ganglion cells in the retinal ganglion cell layer is seen at 6 weeks of age
• fewer and less fasciculated axon bundles projecting into the optic disc
• the cross-sectional area of the optic nerve is reduced
• an increased proportion of the axons project into the ipsilateral optic track or into the optic nerve of the opposite eye
• retinal ganglion axons fail to reach the midline at E13.5
• At E15.5, the axons in the optic nerve are less fasciculated and appear to be grouped into two bundles
• in addition, a substantial portion of retinal ganglion cells fail to send out axons or their axons do not exit the optic cup
