N normal phenotype
mortality/aging
• homozygous null mice are born alive but die within a few hours

nervous system
• from E11.5 - E14.5 at all axial levels of the spinal cord and hindbrain commissural axons fail to cross the floor plate and instead veer away after reaching the vicinity of the floor plate
• after failing to cross the floor plate the commissural axons grow longitudinally along the ipsilateral side of the floor plate in a disorganized manner with most failing to stay close to the floor plate, some stalled close to the floor plate, and others turning rostrally, caudally, or bifurcating and growing in both directions
• in vitro assays indicate axons from homozygous mutants are prematurely Slit responsive
• the spinal cord fails to stay attached at the ventral midline during dissection indicating a thin or fragile floor plate
