mortality/aging
• all pups died within 24 hours of birth

behavior/neurological
• animals lacked milk in stomachs

craniofacial
• cleft secondary palate; both maxillary and palatine shelves were cleft; developmental abnormalities were first noted at E16.5
• E12.5, the palatal shelves of dlggt/dlggt embryos were normal in size and grew down the side of the tongue
• at E16.5, mutant embryos displayed only partial elevation of both palatal shelves, total elevation of one shelf but not the other, or elevation of both palatal shelves but lack of fusion at the midline

growth/size/body
• cleft secondary palate; both maxillary and palatine shelves were cleft; developmental abnormalities were first noted at E16.5
• E12.5, the palatal shelves of dlggt/dlggt embryos were normal in size and grew down the side of the tongue
• at E16.5, mutant embryos displayed only partial elevation of both palatal shelves, total elevation of one shelf but not the other, or elevation of both palatal shelves but lack of fusion at the midline
• at E12.5, embryonic weight is reduced by 20%
• animals were smaller than littermates
• at E17.5, mutant embryos are visibly smaller than wild-type and heterozygous embryos
• growth retardation noted in utero from E14.5
• distended abdomens due to build up of air in stomach and intestines
• build up of air in stomach and intestines

homeostasis/metabolism
• animals became cyanotic after birth

limbs/digits/tail
• 50% have kinked or ventrally curled tails
• 50% have kinked or ventrally curled tails

skeleton

vision/eye
• increased number of proliferating cells in the lens epithelium

digestive/alimentary system
• cleft secondary palate; both maxillary and palatine shelves were cleft; developmental abnormalities were first noted at E16.5
• E12.5, the palatal shelves of dlggt/dlggt embryos were normal in size and grew down the side of the tongue
• at E16.5, mutant embryos displayed only partial elevation of both palatal shelves, total elevation of one shelf but not the other, or elevation of both palatal shelves but lack of fusion at the midline
• build up of air in stomach and intestines

embryo
• at E12.5, embryonic weight is reduced by 20%

renal/urinary system
• after 5 days in culture, mutant metanephroi display a 30% reduction in glomerular number following adjustment for embryonic weight
• in contrast, branch tip number is not significantly altered in 5-day cultured metanephroi following adjustment for embryonic weight
• nephrogenesis is impaired either as a secondary consequence to a defect in ureteric branching morphogenesis and/or due to a delay in mesenchyme-to-epithelial transition
• at E12.5, metanephric size is reduced by 20%, as estimated by projected area; however, the metanephric size:embryonic weight ratio remains normal
• at E17.5, mutant metanephroi are histologically normal but visibly smaller than those of wild-type and heterozygous controls
• after 3 days in culture, mutant metanephroi are visibly smaller than wild-type cultured metanephroi
• after 5 days in culture, mutant metanephroi show a 30% decrease in nephron number
