• 10 days after splenectomy, erythrocytes exhibit Heinz bodies which are rarely seen in wild-type mice
• with presence of nucleated RBC precursors
• mutant erythrocytes show less of an affinity on oxygen saturation than wild-type erythrocytes
• erythrocytes have a shortened lifespan
