mortality/aging
• homozygotes obtained from heterozygous intercrosses display reduced prenatal survival

endocrine/exocrine glands
• following pilocarpine stimulation, homozygotes produce a markedly viscous and tenacious saliva of reduced volume relative to saliva collected from control mice, suggesting impaired serous acinar cell function
• mutant saliva is hypertonic (420 mosM), with significantly increased osmolality and higher concentrations of Na+, K+, and Cl- relative to wild-type mice
• however, no significant differences are observed in saliva pH measured prior to HCO3 loss or in total protein secretion and amylase activity
• homozygotes display a >60% reduction in pilocarpine-stimulated saliva production relative to wild-type mice

growth/size/body
• homozygotes are grossly normal but exhibit a mild (~20%) growth retardation when placed on solid food after weaning
• however, no differences in growth are observed when homozygotes are placed on a Peptamine liquid diet after weaning

digestive/alimentary system
• following pilocarpine stimulation, homozygotes produce a markedly viscous and tenacious saliva of reduced volume relative to saliva collected from control mice, suggesting impaired serous acinar cell function
• mutant saliva is hypertonic (420 mosM), with significantly increased osmolality and higher concentrations of Na+, K+, and Cl- relative to wild-type mice
• however, no significant differences are observed in saliva pH measured prior to HCO3 loss or in total protein secretion and amylase activity
• homozygotes display a >60% reduction in pilocarpine-stimulated saliva production relative to wild-type mice

homeostasis/metabolism
• homozygotes display a >60% reduction in pilocarpine-stimulated saliva production relative to wild-type mice
