• absolute numbers for both DN1 and DN2 populations are slightly but significantly reduced in the thymus
• the proportion of double positive thymocytes undergoing positive selection (i.e. expressing high levels of activation markers) is reduced
• double-positive thymocytes have higher rates of apoptosis when cultured without growth factors or when stimulated in vivo by anti-CD3 treatment
• mice have a 35% reduction in CD8+ T cells in the spleen and lymph nodes
• single-positive CD4 and CD8 T cells in the thymus have slight reduction in numbers within the thymus
• 50% more CD8+ T cells are apoptotic than controls when cultured 36 hours without growth factors
• the in vivo viability of CD8+ T cells is also 50% of controls 5 days after transfer to immunocompetent hosts
