nervous system
• an outgrowth of thick dendrites (>2.5 micrometers) extend into and throughout the stratum oriens
• this results in about a 40-fold increase in the density of neurites found in the stratum oriens
• some neurons lack a typical thick apical dendrite projecting into the stratum radiatum and instead have a cluster of thin, short neuritis
• 42% of neurons display tortuous/undulating apical dendrites compared to just 6% in WT mice
• there is also a decrease in the number of pyramidal cells bearing 4 basal somata stems, which leads to decreases of about 25% in basilar dendritic lengths
• dendrites from pyramidal neurons have an abnormal pattern with poor alignment and are wavier in appearance than the straight apical dendrites of wild-type mice
• the mean linearity index for apical dendrites is 1.3 +/- 0.05 compared to 1.06 +/- 0.01
• the number of branches on apical dendrites of CA1 pyramidal cells is decreased by about 25% for primary dendrites and by about 50% for secondary dendrites
• total dendritic length is also reduced by about a third
• lengths of mushroom and finger spines of pyramidal cells is significantly reduced
• there is a significant reduction in subsequent burst responses of the CA1 region of the hippocoampus with burst response numbers 2, 4, and 6 being 42%, 51%, and 43% of the initial response while subsequent responses of the wild-type hippocampus are similar to the initial response
• there is a significant decrease of 60% in the magnitude of LTP in hippocampal slices prepared from area CA1
• there is also a significant reduction in subsequent burst responses with burst response numbers 2, 4, and 6 being 42%, 51%, and 43% of the initial response while subsequent responses of the wild-type hippocampus are similar to the initial response
