mortality/aging
• increase in mortality beginning at around 1 year of age
• providing soft food can prevent mortality

growth/size/body
• mutants exhibit incisor, but not molar, defects
• incisor shape is altered after delayed eruption
• in older mice, the incisal part of the upper incisors is frequently missing and incisors show buckling of their apices
• surface of the incisors is irregular and exhibits pitting
• incisors are characterized by disorganized periodontal ligaments (PDL); PDL is increased in thickness due to increased accumulation of collagens, fibroblast density in the incisal half of the ligament is reduced, and the acellular cementum is increased in thickness and an increased number of rests of Malassez are seen in mice older than 6 months
• an increased number of rests of Malassez is seen in mice older than 6 months
• delay in the time of incisor eruption; eruption rate is slower at 3-6 weeks and is essentially stopped at 6-7 months
• at 2 months of age, incisors show increased thickness of the dentin layers in the apical region and pulp closure
• the enamel layer of incisors at 2 months of age is mineralized until well into the apical area
• surface of the incisors is irregular and exhibits pitting
• 20-30% reduction in weight that persists into adulthood

behavior/neurological
• mutants become malnourished due to incisor defects; soft food can prevent malnutrition

craniofacial
• mutants exhibit incisor, but not molar, defects
• incisor shape is altered after delayed eruption
• in older mice, the incisal part of the upper incisors is frequently missing and incisors show buckling of their apices

• surface of the incisors is irregular and exhibits pitting

cellular
• MEFs show reduced cell adhesion and spreading on collagen I and reduced ability to retract collagen lattices
• MEFs show reduced cell proliferation

skeleton
• mutants exhibit incisor, but not molar, defects
• incisor shape is altered after delayed eruption
• in older mice, the incisal part of the upper incisors is frequently missing and incisors show buckling of their apices
