reproductive system
• ovaries lack primary follicles at P3
• ovaries beyond 7 weeks of age lack follicular structures
• ovarian follicle development appears to be impaired during the primordial-to-primary follicle transition
• fewer advanced follicle types and empty follicles are observed at P7 with no oocytes remaining by 3 weeks of age
• ovaries are significantly smaller at P7 and atrophic by 10 weeks of age
• adult ovaries occupy only ~1/10 of wild-type volume
• however, newborn ovaries show normal morphology and histology
• ovaries contain few germ cells by 3 weeks of age
• however, newborn ovaries show a normal number of oocytes within germ cell clusters and primordial follicles
• ovaries beyond 7 weeks of age lack germ cells
• all females are infertile

• at 7 weeks of age, seminiferous tubules are hypocellular with clumps of Sertoli cells in the lumen
• at 3 weeks of age testes from homozygotes weigh ~one half that of wild-type or heterozygous testes; in adults, testes weighed 3.5-fold less than wild-type

• at 3 weeks of age testes from homozygotes weigh ~one half that of wild-type or heterozygous testes; in adults, testes weighed 3.5-fold less than wild-type
• at 10 days of age, 90% of testes tubules do not contain spermatocytes; at 2 weeks, 65% of tubules do not contain spermatocytes and at 7 weeks tubules are devoid of spermatocytes
• in 8 month old males spermatogonia stem cells continue to proliferate but cannot differentiate into mature spermatocytes
• males are infertile due to defective spermatogonial differentiation
