cellular
• in the brains of 3 to 4 and 18 to 24 month old mice, hydrogen peroxide production is increased 2-fold and succinate-supported hydrogen peroxide production is increased relative to in wild-type mice in an age-dependent manner with older mice producing more hydrogen peroxide
• in the brains of older mice, manganese superoxidase and mitochondrial glutathione peroxidase activity are increased
• aconitase activity is reduced 60% in brain mitochondria relative to in wild-type mice

N
• despite increased production of hydrogen peroxide in the brain, no defects in brain morphology or in the nigrostriatal pathway are detected (J:125021)
