• there is a decrease of about a third in the number of CD8+ T cells that activate and proliferate in response to S. aureus superantigen
• production of IFN-gamma and TNF is impaired
• cytolytic activity is reduced by half to a third in vitro
• IFN-gamma secretion by activated CD8+ T cells is impaired in vitro
• TNF secretion by activated CD8+ T cells is impaired in vitro
• mice are resistant to a hepatitis model induced by injections of concanavalin A (ConA)
• less than 10% of mice die after a lethal dose of ConA compared to 80% of control mice
• mice are also resistant to a second hepatitis model induced by Listeria monocytogenes infection with half the mice alive 200 hours after infection compared to less than 10% of controls
